Catnaps

Picture 3

I’ve recently become obsessed with yet another philly band. This one’s called Catnaps and they released a new EP in January. It’s a lot different from their more pop punk roots. They’ve taken a turn for the dream pop. Cherry Lips is as absolute masterpiece (with an absolutely silly video). If you’re more into straight pop punk listen to their 2012 EP Boys Drool. More into twee? True their first album, Why Do You Whisper.  Shuteye is my favorite thing they’ve released so far, but to each his own.

They’re on a short tour right now and playing with a few of my favorite bands like Parasol and Omar. Go if you can!

4/5 @ fort warner (MA) w/ parasol, landline, boyfoot bear
4/6 @ the only place that ever felt like home (CT) w/ SHRINNIRS, POSTURE AND THE GRIZZLY, NIKOLAUS, SLEEK FOR THE LONG FLIGHT
4/7 @ tba (NYC)
4/20 @ the fire (PA) w/ bleached, hunters, omar

Places to Hide- Getting Old EP

Places to hide from Charleston, SC/ Atlanta, GA are a (basically) female-fronted pop-punk band who have released one small EP which had one large impact on me. I’m crazy about it.  It’s got just enough of a folksy influence and heart. It’s six songs long, three of which you can hear on their bandcamp.  Word on the street is that they have a full length coming out pretty soon.

Favorite Christmas song this holiday season:

I just wanna watch how you’ll age and the way your clothes change.

Teen Suicide (The Band)

Picture 1

Teen Suicide, an emo band from Maryland, is like no other band I can think of. They’re like a lo-fi experimental emo band or something. I feel like that doesn’t do them justice. You should really just listen to them. They’re clearly outta my league review-wise.

Their first release of 2012, DC snuff film, came out in February. I downloaded it from their bandcamp around that time and have loved it ever since. BUT I went to their bandcamp again today and realized they might be superheros or robots because in the past year they’ve put out three more releases. That’s two LP’s and two EP’s over the course of ten months. Their second LP i will be my own hell because there is a devil inside my body  I am now discovering is even better than DC snuff.

If you read this and don’t click one of the above links you will for real break my heart.

Do you think it’s too late to buy these albums for everyone I know for Christmas?

Cain Marko- Show Me the Way to go Home

Tapes Not Bombs released the new Cain Marko album, Show Me the Way to go Home, earlier this week. The Grand Rapids punk 4-piece has been at it since late 2010. This is their first full length album after a number of EPs. All of their music is available for a small price on their bandcamp. Their last release was the At Sea EP almost two years ago. They have become SO much more musically interesting since then. At Sea is basically generic and boring. Maybe it’s just not my style. But it’s so great to see how far they took all the promise that EP held for improvement and made something incredible. The vocals are the best part of the early work and those don’t change, but the lyrics, melodies, and hooks improve like crazy. If you like Tiger’s Jaw or Hot Water Music you should check these guys out! Especially the tracks Promises in Pen and Kitchen Knife. I bet they’d be a blast to see live and I bet if you’re reading this in Michigan you can.

Fay Wray — S/T

So this album came out in 1998 on No Idea Records, but I’m still going to write about this erstwhile band because … they deserve it.  This 12 song record clocks in at just under 30 minutes, which means they are probably doing something right, pop punk-wise. Hailing from South Florida, this band has a little bit of a Hot Water Music/Clairmel  sound going on, but their vocals have their own vibes, perfect at shouting & singing. The lyrics are at times funny, honest, or both. Baywatch is a great one about going crazy watching shitty TV. Amanda is probably my favorite, but maybe just because it’s the token love song.

This album isn’t available anymore from the record label, so I’ve uploaded it here for you to download. Apparently No Idea is selling Bright Eyes albums now?
